Accountants get quoted more for websites than most small businesses do, and frequently for the same website. Some of that premium is earned. Some of it is the word "professional" being used as a pricing strategy. Here is how to tell which one you are looking at.
Most accountancy websites are built for other accountants. They list the qualifications, name the software partners and deploy the word "bespoke" at least once, usually near a photograph of a calculator. Meanwhile the person actually visiting is a plumber at ten o'clock at night wondering whether he has just gone over the VAT threshold and, if so, whether it matters. Here is what a site for that person needs, and it is not the calculator photograph.
Ask five Swansea web designers what a website costs and you will receive five numbers, four of which arrive wrapped in the phrase "it depends", delivered in the tone of someone who has just been asked how long a piece of string is and is rather enjoying it. It does depend. But you are allowed to know what it depends on before anyone books a discovery call, so here is the version we would want if we were the ones buying.
You have registered the company, opened the bank account and told your mother. Somewhere on the list, between "get insurance" and "find out what an SIC code is and whether you chose the right one", sits "website". Here is when it actually needs doing, when it genuinely does not, and the one thing about it that is a legal requirement rather than a matter of taste.
Websites do not retire. They do not send a card round the office and make a speech. They simply stop doing the job, and everyone carries on assuming they are still doing it, because who checks? Here are the seven signs, and, in the interests of fairness, two signs that the site is fine and you should stop worrying about it.
